A Fez ceramic vase scrollwork pattern with a deep blue neck

This Fez ceramic vase scrollwork design pairs a solid blue-and-teal neck with a body of interlocking black spirals. The combination reads darker and more graphic than the lighter, gold-trimmed necks typical of Fez pottery. Artisans shape the vase by hand on a traditional potter’s wheel. They paint the scrollwork afterward, in a single freehand pass. The spirals are drawn rather than stamped, so their spacing shifts slightly around the body. That small shift is a trace of the hand that painted it.

Design details

Rows of tight black spirals fill the sides of the vase. They frame a central column of flame-shaped tulip motifs in red, blue, gold, and teal. A narrow band of colored dashes sits just below the shoulder. The neck itself is painted solid blue with a teal rim, a heavier treatment than the thin gold banding used on lighter designs. This kind of dense scrollwork sits within the same tradition of Moroccan pottery and hand-painted craftsmanship found throughout Fez’s workshops. Artisans often use black outline work to anchor brighter colors within a pattern.

Styling this vase at home

A Fez ceramic vase scrollwork piece like this one suits a bolder, more graphic interior. The strong black linework stands out best against plainer surroundings. Place it on a dark wood shelf or against a light wall so the pattern has room to read clearly. It also holds its own without other Moroccan pieces nearby, since the scrollwork already carries most of the visual weight.
