A Fez ceramic vase lattice pattern built from repetition
This Fez ceramic vase lattice design uses one of the most geometric motifs in Moroccan pottery: a chain of interlocking diamonds, each one framed in gold and filled with a scatter of small blue dots. Artisans shape each vase by hand on a traditional potter’s wheel. They paint the pattern afterward, row by row, using a steady hand rather than a stencil. Because of this, small irregularities in the diamonds are part of the piece, not a flaw.
Design details
A thin band of black scrollwork sits just below the neck, separating the plain teal-and-gold rim from the patterned body. Below that, the main design repeats around the vase: a red spiral sits at the top and bottom of each diamond point, and a small teal clover fills the white space at the pattern’s center. Fez artisans have used interlocking geometric patterns like this one for generations, and the design still traces back to the wider tradition of Moroccan zellige and pottery craftsmanship found throughout the city’s medina.
