A Fez ceramic vase fern pattern in a single tone

This Fez ceramic vase fern design takes a quieter approach than the multicolor patterns typical of Fez pottery, using a single soft teal tone against an unglazed white body. Artisans shape the vase by hand on a traditional potter’s wheel, then paint the fern motif freehand in one sitting. Because the color never changes, every curve of the brush is visible on the finished piece, which gives it a looser, more painterly feel than the geometric patterns found on most Fez ceramics.

Design details

A tall fern frond winds up the front of the vase, its stem curling into a loose spiral near the top and again near the base. Smaller leaf shapes and a scalloped wave pattern fill the space around it, all painted in the same teal glaze at varying thickness. The neck carries a simpler version of the same motif in a narrow band beneath the rim. While most Fez pottery favors dense, multicolor geometry, single-tone florals like this one draw on the same long tradition of Moroccan pottery and hand-painted craftsmanship, just with a more restrained palette.
